There is a comfortable myth that lives in small organisations. It sits quietly in the corner, rarely challenged, and it says this: insider threats are a problem for big companies. Banks. Governments. The kind of places where badges are scanned, doors hiss open, and someone, somewhere, is always watching.
For everyone else, the thinking goes, there simply isn’t enough worth stealing. Not enough staff to hide malicious intent. Not enough complexity for something to go wrong quietly.

There is a subtle shift happening here. In the past, an insider needed both access and intent to cause real damage. Now access combined with curiosity is often enough. AI acts as a kind of amplifier for human instinct. It rewards experimentation. It encourages people to try things, to ask questions, to move faster.
That is exactly what businesses want.
It is also exactly what creates risk.
For small organisations, this lands differently. Large enterprises tend to have layered controls, dedicated security teams, and the kind of inertia that slows everything down. Small businesses, on the other hand, thrive on speed and trust. People wear multiple hats. Processes are lightweight. Decisions are quick.
That same agility becomes a vulnerability when AI enters the picture.
Because no one is really watching how it is being used.
No one has drawn clear boundaries around what is acceptable.
No one has stopped to ask whether the tools being used today are quietly moving data outside the organisation’s control.
Not a rogue employee, but a well-meaning one. Not a deliberate breach, but a series of small, reasonable decisions that add up to exposure.
The danger is not dramatic. It does not announce itself with alarms or headlines. It drips. A paragraph here. A dataset there. A login detail summarised, a process explained, a customer interaction refined. Over time, the organisation begins to leak, not through malice, but through convenience.
What does this mean in practice? It means that insider threat is no longer about distrust. It is about understanding how power has shifted.
It means recognising that AI is not just a tool, but a force multiplier attached to every member of staff.
It means accepting that “too small to matter” is no longer a protective shield, because the tools being used do not care about the size of the organisation, only the value of the data.
And most importantly, it means changing the conversation.
Security awareness can no longer stop at phishing emails and password hygiene. It now has to include how AI is used day to day. What can be shared. What must never leave. Where the invisible boundaries actually are.
And they will do so with the quiet confidence of someone holding a very powerful tool, trying to do a good job, and having no reason to think that anything could possibly go wrong.
