A Stitch in Time Saves Nine
When I was a child, I heard the saying and completely misunderstood it: I thought, “How can anyone stitch time?” Needless to say, it was quite a while before I actually understood the true meaning of the term, and even more time until I started to apply it to the world around me. What can I say? I’m clearly just a bit of a slow learner.
Now that I do understand though, it is something that is very useful. Perhaps not so much in the original meaning as clothing is pretty much disposable these days, but rather applying it to security and training. If your untrained staff get the training that they need before they do something stupid like click on the wrong phishing email, then you get to avoid data breaches along with all the costly unpleasantness that comes with such things.
If you think that a quick word from your IT provider will suffice or you can get some free training with your Antivirus software, then I would remind you of another old saying: “Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.” This one is just plain wrong: if you don’t look in the horse’s mouth, and carefully check all its teeth, then you are fooling yourself if you think that you have just got a quality steed. You cannot skimp on cyber security training and expect anything other than trouble. The only question that you should be asking yourself if you have taken the very cheap option is “When will my network get breached?”. The days when just having a decent firewall and some antivirus software would keep you safe have long gone.
